World Mental Health Day 2023

🌏 World Mental Health Day – Tuesday 10th October🌏

Join us on World Mental Health Day, we we will hosting various events and performances, or simply drop in for a drink and discover the fascinating history of Epsom Hospital Cluster.
A moving exhibition of cyanotypes derived from glass plate photograph negatives of patients from the Epsom Psychiatric Hospital cluster in the early twentieth century – specifically those buried in the Horton Cemetery.

Unveiling of Forget Me Not Memorial Garden, followed by a creative celebration including specially-commissioned poetry and a choral composition for children’s voices, and a dance performance of ‘Garden Unlocked’ by Company Concentric – a group supported in 2022 by The Horton’s Cultivate scheme for early-career artists.

Forget Me Not Memorial Garden is a moving temporary outdoor installation – part of the Out of Sight, Out of Minds Project, organised Friends of Horton Cemetery, and led by Dr. Alana Harris.

The installation of more than 1500 ceramic flowers – each one painted individually by members of the public – aims to bring recognition and dignity to pauper patients and former service personnel laid to rest and abandoned on derelict land in Horton Cemetery.

4pm-6pm – Pin-Hole Camera Drop-In Workshop
Award-winning tintype photographer Emma Brown will host a free workshop for children, explaining more about the photographs used in the Out of Sight, Out of Mind Project and demonstrating how to make a pin-hole camera.

8pm – We Are What We Overcome
Combining upbeat original music with thought provoking comedy and spoken word, We Are What We Overcome is the story of one man’s journey to good mental health via a very bad idea.

The Horton’s permanent exhibition will also be available to view. Dedicated to the fascinating history of Epsom’s cluster of five psychiatric hospitals, and the people who lived and worked there.
