Spanish Season 2023: History Talk – Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in Spain

Author and musical director Antonio Hernandez Moreno unwraps the history behind bohemian dance impresario Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes’ famous mid-first world war tour through Spain and explains his theory on the tragic connection between dancers Vaslav Nijinsky and Felix Garcia.

A series of classical music and dance concerts pay tribute to the tragic Spanish dance prodigy Felix Garcia who was secretly banished to Horton Asylum in 1919, following a clash with the Russian Ballet. Certified insane and committed to an Epsom asylum. Declared dead to his family and the outside world, Félix was in fact confined secretly for another 22 years, until he died in 1941. He is buried in an unmarked mass grave at Horton Cemetery.
