Spanish Season 2023: Boccherini In Love

Spanish Season Concert: Boccherini in Love

Tuesday 18th July, 8pm

Music – Song – Dance

Tickets: £28*

Immerse yourself in in this celebration of famous Spanish-influenced classical composers with an exciting programme of music, song and traditional dance – drawn from the love story of Luigi Boccherini. Performed ‘in-the-round.’

During the 18th and 19th centuries, it became fashionable for composers to include popular Spanish rhythms and melodies in their works. Composer Boccherini was persuaded to move from Italy to Spain under the protection of the Spanish Infante (Prince) where his love affair flourished with a soprano singer based at the Spanish court.

In this exquisite concert, the works of Boccherini and his influences are presented as a programme inspired by love.

Programme

  • Three sonates for keyboard by Domenico Scarlatti
  • Aria Accademica nº 14 G 557 by Luigi Boccherini
  • First sonata for keyboard and flute G.525 by Luigi Boccherini
  • Allegro con moto – Adagio – Presto assai
  • Aria Accademica nº 3 G 546 by Luigi Boccherini
  • “Fandango” from Quintet G.448 by Luigi Boccherini
  • Sonates nº 90 * 12 y 84* by Pater Antonio Soler
  • The quaintrelle and the nightingale by Enrique Granados
  • Polo gitano from “Andalusian Scenes” by Tomás Bretón

Boccherini in Love offers the rare opportunity to discover authentic Spanish compositions, songs and dances, including the traditional ‘bolero dance’, as well as the fandango, the seguidilla or the polo, accompanied by the complex technique of tapping and castanets.
