Creative Hand-Stitching Workshop with Maria Walker
Saturday 18th January, 10:15am – 3:15pm
Create a unique and striking hand-stitched textile artwork from a simple line drawing in this full-day workshop.
The day will begin with a short tour of Maria Walker’s exhibition in the Atrium by the artist herself, where you will view a collection of objects on display and see examples of hand-stitched artworks that Maria has created.
Guided by the artist, you will learn how to transfer line drawings of objects onto fabric using simple running stitch.
In this workshop you will learn how to prepare line drawing designs using tracing techniques; how to simplify what you are seeing to do some simple line drawings from them and how these can then become a template for your stitched work.
Your embroidered piece can then be embellished further by adding more additional stitching and fabric.
Maria will provide some of her own designs but participants may also bring in picture of objects from books or magazines instead.
All equipment and materials are provided but if you have any of the following items that you would like to use, please bring them in.
- Your own sewing kit
- Embroidery hoop
- A particular small object you would like to use for design
- Light coloured cotton or linen fabric or textile item made from cotton or linen you would like to stitch on such as a handkerchief or vintage napkin.
Maria Walker’s Exhibition: These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things will be running from 4th – 23rd January.
This workshop will take place in our mezzanine studio which is fully accessible. There will be a short lunch break. Lunch can be pre-ordered in our café on arrival.
