A year-long singing project bringing the community together through the power of music has come to an end – resulting in a thriving brand new adult choir for The Horton and a wonderful concert.
The intergenerational singing celebration, was held on 17th June 2026 at The Horton with school choirs from Southfield Park, Danetree and Wallace Fields Juniors. Each choir performed two songs of their choice, culminating in a powerful communal performance of “Built to Last,” composed and arranged by local musician Ben Tompsett. All of the singers had learned Built To Last during their own rehearsal time, after a Teach the Teacher session. The young singers brought incredible energy and fun, filling our performance space with vibrant melodies.
The event was the first ever performance from The Horton Choir with their musical director Timothy Caister. Our brand-new choir has been meeting every Tuesday since April. Notably, they rehearse in the very space that once served as Europe’s first-ever dedicated centre for music therapy and members have themselves reported a boost in wellbeing and pleasure in making new friends.
The singing project was supported by The D’Oyly Carte Trust, as part of a year of activities marking The Horton’s history as the site of Europe’s first centre for music therapy.
Thank you to all the schools, families, and choir members who made this memorable event possible.
The Horton Choir is a community choir – and people of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome to join.
Inspired by our pioneering heritage in music therapy and wellbeing, The Horton’s group singing sessions run on Tuesday afternoons 1.30pm-3pm.
You don’t need to be able to read music or even know how to sing; the important aspects are that you love music and want to meet new people. We will be especially pleased to welcome you if you’ve never been in a choir before.
The Horton Choir’s singing sessions are led by Timothy Caister, a local professional musician and choir lead and take place in our Performance Space. The space is fully accessible and there is a free car park and a café .
