The Horton’s First Summer Exhibition
1st – 21st August 2024
We’re delighted to announce the first ever public Summer Exhibition at The Horton Arts Centre, Epsom, celebrating creativity from all over the county.
Amateur and professional artists throughout Surrey were invited to submit artwork on the theme State of Mind. The theme acknowledges The Horton’s important heritage as a place of pioneering mental health care, on the site of the former Horton Asylum Chapel.
Since opening two years ago, The Horton has hosted exhibitions of work from groups, collectives and individuals across the region but this is the first showcase of public work on a theme, selected by a judging panel. The Horton’s open competition is modelled on the enduring Summer Exhibition started by the Royal Academy in 1769.
Visitors can enjoy viewing an eclectic mix of work by established artists alongside emerging talent and first-time exhibitors, in the stunning grade-II listed Atrium gallery space from 1st to 21st August.
Artwork includes painting, textile, pen & ink, multi-media and 3D pieces.
Entry is free.
Most works of art will be available to buy, with prices from £100 – £2000.
Three prize-winning artists will be announced at a special launch event on 1st August, securing a main competition prize of free exhibition space and promotion in 2025, at The Horton, Epsom.
Director of The Horton Maria Reeves said:
“Inspiration through participation is important to us as a cultural charity. Enabling both amateur and professional artists to exhibit together is exciting and it gives talented people from all backgrounds the opportunity to showcase what they can do.
“The theme State of Mind has provoked the creation of some very personal work. Many of the artists who have been selected have lived experience of the impact of a mental health condition, or endured emotionally challenging situations. Other artists portray images of peace, confusion, sadness or euphoria. There is sure to something that strikes a chord with everyone who visits.”
The Summer Exhibition has been sponsored by eating and lifestyle hub, Epsom Square.
