The Horton Arts Centre, formerly known as Horton Chapel, is part of the surviving buildings of the former Horton Hospital which formed part of Epsom’s Hospital Cluster.
At the turn of the twentieth century, London City Council commissioned George T. Hine, well-known architect to the ‘Commissioners in Lunacy,’ to design the Horton’s hospital complex and Chapel. Hine’s paper to the RIBA in 1901 still provides a valuable review of asylum design and planning.
In this fascinating talk, Robin Crane, lead architect for the recent renovation and conversion of The Horton, will explore the design history of the Epsom Hospital Cluster and the challenges and opportunities of the community-led project to convert the semi-derelict Horton Chapel into the stunning building of today.
The Horton was named winner of the Surrey Heritage Awards Building of the Year 2022, by Surrey Historic Building Trust.
Talk followed by Q&A from the audience.
