Hannah James and Toby Kuhn
Friday 2nd May, 8pm
Folk duo Hannah James and Toby Kuhn take audiences on a journey through sound, texture, emotion and rhythm.
Hannah is an award-winning folk musician, dancer, songwriter and singer, a creative force renowned for her work with Lady Maisery, Seasick Steve, Maddy Prior and Songs of Separation with Eliza Carthy, Karine Polwart and others. French cellist Toby is a post-classical musician with a taste for improvisation and folk music of all persuasions.
Effortlessly blending, the pair play and dance through a series of thoughtful tunes, soulful songs and joyful set pieces in which Hannah’s vocal mastery is underpinned by Toby’s musicality.
Their music is soulful, original and conversational. The combination of accordion and cello allows for a huge palette of sounds and textures which lift James’s pure voice and deeply honest songwriting.
“James’ voice is the most beautiful thing, it seems almost incapable of a false step, impossibly pure. Kuhn’s cello is hypnotic, insistent and quite simply, astonishing. A musical marriage that is heaven sent.”
