Film: The Red Turtle (PG)
Friday 12th April, 2pm

Selected by The Horton’s Young Film Programmers Group.

Film critic Mark Kermode says: “This is a film that respects the sound of silence. It is a work of art which transcends boundaries of language, culture, geography and age. It is simply magnificent.”

In a nutshell:
The Red Turtle, (a European co-production with the iconic Japanese Studio Ghibli of My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away fame) asks the audience to consider what it might be like to be shipwrecked on a desert island. Prepare to be swept away with the exquisite scenes of the remote island and the powerful storytelling delivered with next-to-no dialogue from the main characters.

Who should watch it? The Red Turtle is rated PG. It is likely to satisfy the interests of all Studio Ghibli fans but a word of warning, as with many powerful stories, there are some scenes that could frighten younger children.

Why have the young film programmers chosen this animation?
Anything associated with Studio Ghibli is a win! We’re looking forward to immersing ourselves in the luscious scenes of the desert island.
