Film: Song of the Sea (PG)
In a nutshell: Song of the Sea was nominated for an Oscar in 2015. This beautifully crafted animation from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon draws on Irish folklore. The film explores what happens in Ben’s family when he discovers his sister is a mythical creature – a sea-dwelling Selkie.
Who should watch it? Song of the Sea is rated PG and is a little different to your usual Disney/Pixar animation. It’s a must-see for fans of animation and is likely to suit family audiences aged 6+.
Why have the young film programmers chosen this animation?
The care and attention put into the making of this film is impressive. The animation is hand-drawn rather than computer generated like lots of other animations. Song of the Sea is built on folklore and myths and we like how it shows a family putting itself back together after loss.
For this child-friendly screening we are providing mats and space for younger children to move around, dance and sing along. There will be a 15 minute interval in the middle of the film.
Certificate PG
This film is certified as PG. This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children. The film contains some mild peril, language and pipe smoking images.
