Felt Bag Making Workshop

Felt Bag Making Workshop

Saturday 20th June, 10am – 3pm

Make Your Own Unique Felt Shoulder Bag

Felt making is one of the oldest textile crafts in the world, used in nomadic cultures for centuries to make carpets, boots, clothes and portable homes known as yurts. Today it is also a popular textile craft that allows you to create unique practical and artistic items from 2D art to sumptuous wearables.

In this workshop you will learn how to make a small bag with a flap and shoulder strap large enough for all those essentials: phone, keys, purse and a bit more. The tutor will demonstrate each step and give students individual help and advice.

Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience of wet felt making, the workshop will cover several felt making foundation skills including:

  • Blending and laying out wool fibres
  • Incorporating other fibres and fabric for surface decoration
  • Using a resist for 3D work
  • How to manipulate your work to create shape and detail
  • How to attach strap to bag without stitching

The workshop fee includes a pack of wool fibres together with other fibres for decoration, plus the use during the workshop of the felt making equipment required.

Students will need to bring the following:

  • Old towel: a large hand towel or small bath towel is ideal
  • Plastic bowl (big enough to hold around 2 litres of water in)
  • Plastic bag to take wet work home.
  • Apron – optional
