Ahead of full public opening we are hosting a Create and Make Taster Day at The Horton. The event will introduce a range of potential courses and workshops that can be enjoyed by beginners, as well as helping us to test our spaces. Other more advanced and experimental arts workshops will be piloted at a later date.

Visitors have the opportunity to try three different 30-minute activities hosted by artists and makers. A brief description of the activities is shown below.

Booking in the last 24 hours will be pot luck on which activities have spaces. You will be allocated three on the day.

On offer:

Life Drawing Dynamic observational drawing with a live model using graphite pencil or charcoal on a variety of paper surfaces.
(Please note: the model for this session will be clothed).
Collaborative Embroidery Create a mindful collaborative embroidery piece, trying out different embroidery stitches to form words, flowers and other imagery.
Concertina Sketchbook Explore a range of art materials with drawing, collage and writing in concertina sketchbook.
Discover Ikebana* Discover the ancient Japanese art of Ikebana, giving artistic life to real flowers. Create a simple arrangement.
Macramé Taster Create a mini wall hanging using the most common macramé knots in 4mm natural cotton cord.
Mindful Drawing Experience the art of mindful guided sketching, creating your own postcard of a brightly-coloured tree.
Animal Patterns Make a contemporary pattern-based acrylic animal painting using tracing, acrylic, pen and pencil.
Sgraffito Pottery Learn the sgraffito pottery technique, using dry plants and textiles to create patterns and shapes on ceramics.
Clay Bust Sculpture Demonstration Learn how to sculpt a portrait in clay, understanding proportions and how to measure. (Artist demonstration only.)
Introduction to Crochet Learn a basic ‘foundation chain’ required to start any crochet project, and see what can be made with just a few simple stitches.
Gyotaku Fish Printing Learn the traditional Japanese method of printing from fresh fish onto rice paper using printing ink, to create a piece of artwork.

*Please note Ikebana – Japanese floral art, is only available during the afternoon session.

All sessions are suitable for adults and young people aged 11+. All spaces are fully accessible.
