Clay Beginners Workshop

Clay Beginners Workshop

Tuesday 29th April, 10:30 – 3pm

Local artisan potter Samantha Pickup will introduce you to the craft of hand-rolling clay.

In this all-day workshop you will make and decorate your very own serving dish and small bowl.

Participants will start by rolling out the clay into slabs and then placing it into moulds. At this stage leaves and stamps can be imprinted into the clay. Various leaves and stamps will be provided but participants are very welcome to bring their own.

To really get a feel for the clay, you’ll explore a pinch pot method to create a small bowl which can also be decorated with various leaves and textures.

After a lunch break, participants will decorate their bowls and dishes with paints and slips that will be provided. Once decorated, Samantha will take all the work back to her studio to be glazed and fired – this process will take up to three weeks. Work will be returned to The Horton to be collected at a later date.

All equipment will be provided; however, students may wish to bring an apron as clay can be very mucky. Participants are welcome to bring their own leaves, flowers and stamps or finer brushes for intricate painting.

About The Tutor:
I am a potter and a teacher, working in my barn alongside the Hogsmill river in Ewell village.

All my work is thrown on the wheel using earthenware clay and individually hand painted, making each one slightly unique. I enjoy making beautiful accessories for the home, especially containers for plants and flowers. I think they bring life and colour indoors, and it makes me happy! Find out more at clay-pots.co.uk

*A £2 ticket booking fee applies when booking online and in person. The booking fee covers costs charged to the charity for the booking system and payment processing.
