Thanks to the intervention of Pablo Sarasate, in the autumn of 1880, the musical entrepreneur Andrés Vidal y Llimona hired Camille Saint-Saëns to perform with the orchestra called ‘Sociedad de Conciertos de Madrid’ in the five sessions of a season at the Teatro Príncipe Alfonso. With his performances, Saint-Saëns had the opportunity to present himself to the Spanish public as an eminent piano virtuoso. Over the course of the five evenings, Saint-Saëns performed works for solo piano and he also performed his Piano Concertos No. 2 and No. 4, which were heard for the first time in Spain. He also showed off his skills as an accompanist for the violinist Paul Viardot, who had traveled with him.
As a ‘souvernir’ or memory of that first visit by Saint-Saëns to Spain was the composition of the piece titled “Jota aragonese” Opus 64, which uses the same musical themes as the works of Liszt and Glinka.
Like Saint-Saëns there have been many foreign composers who have been inspired by Spanish musical art, captivated by popular melodies and ancient rhythms. This concert will showcase some of the best.
