An Evening of Poetry

Enjoy a special evening of poetry from four talented, nationally-recognised poets from across the South East, hosted in The Horton’s atmospheric performance space.
All of the poets are published, with critically acclaimed reviews in the poetry press.
Declan Ryan

Declan Ryan is a poet and critic in London. His first collection, Crisis Actor, was published in the UK by Faber & Faber (July 2023). His reviews and essays have appeared in journals including New York Review of Books, The Baffler, Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian, The Observer, Poetry, Los Angeles Review of Books and New Statesman.
Emily Hasler
Emily Hasler’s second collection wallows at the muddy edges of things. Local Interest (Pavilion Poetry, 2023) exposes the dailiness of disaster and charts the constantly shifting courses of rivers and lives. This is a book of threatened habitats teeming with life, mapping the friable and slippery landscapes on the border of Suffolk and Essex where she lives. It follows her critically-acclaimed first collection The Built Environment (2018). She has been an Early Career Resident at Cove Park, a Hawthornden Fellow and in 2014 received an Eric Gregory Award.
Sarah Westcott
Sarah Westcott grew up in Devon, on the edge of Exmoor, and is particularly interested in writing about the natural world. She has published a pamphlet with Flipped Eye and two collections with Pavilion Poetry and is soon to begin a PhD in Zoopoetics at Birmingham University.
James Goodman
James’s second book of poems, Stone Mountain Fairy Shrimp (Guillemot, 2022), is a playful and surreal take on the sixth great extinction. His first book Claytown (Salt, 2011) explores the nature, landscape and heritage of his native Cornwall. He works at a charitable trust that funds community action.
